OSP

We have looked at the Open Source Portfolio (OSP). It is an excellent system with a plethora of features, but I did have some concerns about it. It seems to be very heavily focused on the postsecondary student. I have some concerns that it will be difficult to use for younger students and they will find some of it to be irrelevant to their needs. That said, OSP is still a viable option if we do not find anything better.

Moodle Forum for e-Portfolios

There is a discussion about e-Portfolios on the Moodle forum. They are attempting to modify another successful online tool, ELGG, to work with the Moodle software.

Wikipedia: ELGG, Moodle.

OpenAcademic

I'm quite familiar with the ELGG/Moodle/Drupal stack. We're working with Bill Fitzgerald from OpenAcademic on adding e-Portfolio functionality to an OpenID-enabled Drupal/Moodle suite. Hang tight! I'm hoping to have some stuff for y'all to play with very soon!

KeepToolkit

Find this Carniege supported tool at

http://www.cfkeep.org/static/index.html.

I created a template for the Nursing Department, here at Umpqua, and presently 65 nursing students are creating portfolios as part of their final project. They will be able to "keep" this toolkit to display and edit their accomplishments after they finish the program. I'm watching with interest to see how the original instructor's intentions morph and what the students bring to the mix.

The software is limited, but that's not really a bad thing. First, because most teachers have only a vague idea what they want to do with an e-portfolio they need to have an easy to use interface to tryout some ideas. And second, because the more advanced user can write html and edit photos with their own local software and upload the material rather than being limited by the built-in html editor. The best of both worlds.

I would recommend that the ORVSD promote the availability of this free and completely online solution. Even if it is not the e-portfolio software that is eventually  chosen, it is a good way for teachers to become familiar with an e-portfolio so they can be more equiped to contribute to the final e-portfolio selection criteria.
